Gross earnings vs. net earnings
The price the app shows you (Uber, DiDi or any other) is your gross earnings: what the passenger is charged for the ride. Your net earnings are what's left after subtracting fuel, and rental or vehicle wear if it applies. Two drivers earning the same gross can end up with very different net income depending on what it costs them to get to work.
The unpaid kilometers count too
From the moment you accept the ride until the passenger gets in, you drive without being paid, but you spend the same fuel and the same time. Adding those kilometers and minutes to the math is what separates "what the platform pays" from "what you actually keep" — it's the difference between a ride that looks good on screen and one that actually is.
$/km and $/hour aren't the same thing
$/km measures whether the ride pays for the distance; $/hour, whether it pays for the time. A short ride through traffic can have a good $/km and a bad $/hour; a long highway ride, the other way around. Looking at both keeps you from accepting rides that only look good by one of the two measures.
A worked example with round numbers
Take a hypothetical ride: a $3,000 fare, a 10km ride plus 2km to the pickup, 20 minutes of ride time plus 5 minutes of waiting, with a vehicle that does 10km per liter of fuel at $1,000 per liter. If you also rent the car or pay insurance, those costs add up the same way before you calculate net earnings.

How is a ride's net earnings calculated?
Net earnings is the ride's price minus fuel and vehicle costs (rental or insurance if they apply), counting the ride's kilometers plus the kilometers to the pickup.
Why can $/km and $/hour give different results?
Because they measure different things: one looks at distance, the other at time. A short ride through traffic can pay well per kilometer and poorly per hour, and vice versa.
Do the kilometers to the pickup count toward net earnings?
Yes. You spend fuel and time getting there even though that stretch isn't paid, so it's subtracted the same way as the ride's own kilometers.
